A record number of books and writers have been nominated for the 11th annual High Plains Book Awards in Billings. The awards are given out as part of the High Plains Bookfest, which seeks to recognize regional authors and literary works that examine and reflect life on the High Plains. For author, High Plains award a welcome affirmation


Editor’s note: Patrick Dobson is a writer and historian who lives in Kansas City, Mo. His latest book, “Canoeing the Great Plains,” was honored at the recent High Plains BookFest in Billings. Here’s a short description of the book: “Tired of an unfulfilling life in Kansas City, Missouri, Patrick Dobson left his job and set off on foot across the Great Plains. After two and a half months, 1,450 miles, and numerous encounters with the people of the heartland, Dobson arrived in Helena, Montana. He then set a canoe on the Missouri and asked the river to carry him safely back to Kansas City, hoping this enigmatic watercourse would help reconnect him with his life.” Continue Reading →

New partnerships expand, enliven poetry slam


The High Plains Grand Slam, a competitive poetry-reading event, just keeps getting bigger and better. This year’s slam, set for Thursday, Oct. 6, at the MoAv Coffee House, 2501 Montana Ave., will be the first one officially registered with Poetry Slam Inc., a nationwide organization, and it will feature a $250 prize for the slam champion. High Plains BookFest opens with talk of the ‘other’ border


Of course it was planned and was not a lucky accident, but still, you couldn’t have found a better way to officially open this year’s High Plains BookFest on Friday. The theme of this year’s festival is Border Crossing, meant to celebrate the literary kinship of the people of the High Plains, whether they live in the United States or Canada.
