Food truck-mobile bakery almost ready to hit the street


Late last decade, Matt Melvin, a chef and baker who had worked for a lot of restaurants, started thinking about opening his own place. But he and his wife, Maggie, were looking at an upfront investment of up $200,000, and it was a hurdle they couldn’t get over. Minnesota Avenue hopping with three building projects


Three big projects are underway on the 2600 block of Minnesota Avenue. Steve and Joni Harman, who own every building on the north side of that block, have converted a portion of what used to be an automobile showroom into Steve’s new law office, with a second-story space that could be either an apartment or another office. Off The Leaf coffeeshop poised for major expansion


Off The Leaf, a popular coffeeshop that opened in 2008 on Grand Avenue, is getting ready to go big. Besides making plans to open two new shops in Billings and four elsewhere in the country, the new owners of the business will send out a fleet of trucks and SUVs on Monday, bringing their mobile coffee bars to music festivals all across the country this summer. Another good reason to like the grain bin house


Regular readers of Last Best News will probably remember our story about Kate Morris’ little grain bin house on the prairie, which we wrote about when it was under construction and again after its completion. We wrote about how Kate worked with Nick Pancheau from Collaborative Design Architects to realize her dream of living in a converted grain bin on the property north of Great Falls that she inherited from her parents. Family Promise appeals to public in fundraising drive


Family Promise of Yellowstone Valley, a nonprofit agency that works to lift families out of homelessness, took its fundraising drive public Wednesday afternoon. Standing in front of a building on South 26th Street that will become a day center for families served by the agency, fundraising chair Carol Roberts announced that Family Promise was already halfway to its $600,000 goal. Grain bin house makes list of ‘genius’ conversions


More accolades for Kate Morris’ beautiful grain bin house near Great Falls. Yahoo! Homes put the house, designed by Nich Pancheau, of Collaborative Design Architects in Billings, on its 2014 list of “most genius converted spaces.” Other projects on the list include a coverted monestary in France, a 120-year-old church in London and a laundromat boiler room converted into a tiny guesthouse in San Francisco, so Kate and Nick are in some pretty cool company.
