Murder victim’s family remembers ‘a really good kid’


Ryan Eakin’s presence permeates the family home near Baxendale a few miles west of Helena. A large, framed pastel-and-charcoal portrait of a bison that he drew adorns a living room wall. Old traps, which Ryan painstakingly cleaned using vinegar, hang from the fireplace mantel. A photograph of him at 9 years old, posing with the mountain goat that he hunted with his father, is at the base of the stairway. Former undersheriff accused of embezzlement

Bill Fleiner, a former Lewis and Clark County undersheriff, is accused of embezzling more than $34,000 from three federal agency programs during his tenure as Broadwater County’s Disaster and Emergency Services coordinator in 2012. According to documents filed in U.S. District Court, a grand jury has charged Fleiner with three counts of theft from a local government receiving federal funding. If convicted, Fleiner could be sent to prison for up to 10 years and fined up to $250,000. (more…) Continue Reading →

Commission tries to keep up with changes in bowhunting


From lighted nocks that make it easier to track arrows to air guns that propel broadheads like bullets, technology quickly is transforming the art of bowhunting. Montana’s largest organization of bowhunters is asking the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission to get ahead of that technological curve, making the process for reviewing archery equipment more rigorous to spell out what equipment is allowed during the fall bowhunting season and what is prohibited. NPR’s ‘Morning Edition’ tours state, airs from Bozeman


BOZEMAN — Brian Leland didn’t care that he had to wake up around 2 a.m. Friday in order to watch a live broadcast of National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” at Feed Café. Wearing a T-shirt that proclaimed he was a part of “The Green Coalition of Gay Loggers for Jesus” and brown Carhartt jeans, Leland said he attended to represent a cross-section of Bozeman.
