Former VP Biden to speak at Democratic dinner


Former Vice President Joe Biden will be the keynote speaker at the 40th Annual Mansfield-Metcalf Dinner in Helena on Saturday, March 10, the Montana Democratic Party announced Thursday. The dinner will be held at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds. Details about tickets and timing will be announced in the coming weeks. To be notified when tickets for the dinner become available, sign up at the Montana Democratic Party website. Benefit is tonight for ailing musician


Les LaFranier, a Billings musician who now lives in Lewistown, was recently diagnosed with stage-four colorectal cancer. Best known for his role as bassist and vocalist in the band Mustache Pete, LaFranier has played in bars and clubs all over Billings and throughout the state and region. A kind-hearted soul who loves to play at any event, LaFranier is beloved by many. Several friends of LaFranier are putting a benefit on for him at the Eagles in Lewistown tonight, Saturday, Jan. 13, where he will take the stage with Billings native Kevin Kemp, reviving Mustache Pete. ‘Certain Women’ worth a look

For an unusual Montana film-viewing experience, you might take in “Certain Women,” a 2016 film written and directed by Kelly Reichardt. We watched it Saturday night on cable and found it both oddly inert and strangely mesmerizing. Not only was the movie filmed in Montana, it is filled with Montana connections. Reichardt based it on three short stories by Maile Meloy, who grew up in Helena. Its stars include Michelle Williams, who grew up in Kalispell, and Lily Gladstone, who was born on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and has a degree from the University of Montana. MSU Billings food pantry will benefit from road race


MSU Billings’ Yellowjacket Emergency Pantry has been selected as one recipient of this year’s Run! Turkey Run! 5K race. This will be the seventh annual race, which is held on Thanksgiving Day. Seattle band, 2 local bands play Sunday at Smiling Dog


The Beatnik City Council invites you to remember the 5th of November with a free all-ages show Sunday night at Smiling Dog Records, 2702 Minnesota Ave. The show will feature Seattle’s SSDD (Steal Shit Do Drugs), playing what the Beatnik City Council calls an “elite brand of raucous punk.” Two local outfits will also perform, “the wunderkinder Silverbow Society and Coors-rockers The Budgets.” The Beatnik City Council is a group that came together to support and promote arts and culture in Billings, its flagship event being the Richard Dreyfest.
